Light Steel Frame Building (LSFB) is a building method used to construct small to medium sized structures using a very light, very stable and very strong steel frame fixed on a concrete foundation, which is then clad with a material of your choice – typically oriented strand board (OSB) but also brick-and-mortar, concrete and mesh mixtures or fibre-cement board.
Light Steel Frame Building is not to be confused with pre-fabricated building kits. It is a construction method of superior efficiency and improved environmental friendliness that incorporates the use of pre-fabricated structural building materials.
Light Steel Frame Building is commonly used in America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many other Asian countries to build single to double storey residential homes, small to medium sized work places, classrooms, storerooms, showrooms and similar structures.
In South Africa, the Southern African Light Steel Frame Building Association (SASFA) is the industry association overseeing Light Steel Frame Construction according the SABS standards. SASFA accredits builders to safely build LSFB structures.
A house constructed using light steel frames will have the same final appearance as any other house and can be finished in the same way as a traditional brick-and-mortar house, but with much greater energy saving and cost saving advantages.
